AI ACCROSS THE AIRLINE VALUE CHAIN

Artificial Intelligence has become one of the most discussed topics in aviation. Yet after an extensive discussion among former airline executives from across Europe, North America, Africa and Latin America during the latest Clear Lift Executive Committee, one conclusion stood above all others:

• AI-driven commercial applications including dynamic pricing, personalised retailing, customer lifetime value analysis and revenue optimisation.

From a finance perspective, the conversation has also evolved significantly.

The role of AI is shifting from reporting historical performance to protecting future enterprise value.

Forward-looking airlines are already using AI to:

• Detect revenue leakage before it impacts financial results.

• Identify payment fraud and duplicate compensation claims within minutes rather than weeks.

• Improve cash flow forecasting and procurement decisions.

• Optimise ancillary revenue and commercial offers in real time.

Perhaps the most important change is that CFOs are no longer funding AI because it is innovative. They expect measurable business outcomes.

Success is increasingly measured by:

• Revenue growth.

• Margin improvement.

• Faster executive decision-making.

• Customer retention.

• Operational resilience.

• Protection of enterprise value.

This represents a profound shift in airline strategy consulting and aviation advisory services.

The discussion also highlighted an equally important reality.

Despite rapid advances in AI, areas such as network planning, crisis management, labour strategy and executive leadership continue to depend upon experienced human judgement.

AI should augment executive capability—not replace it.

o   Building an AI governance framework that balances innovation, risk management, regulatory compliance, and measurable business outcomes.

For Boards and Executive Committees, the strategic question is therefore no longer:

“Should we invest in AI?”

The real question has become:

“How do we integrate AI across commercial, operations, finance and customer strategy to create measurable competitive advantage?”

Ultimately, AI should improve airline profitability through higher aircraft utilisation, lower disruption costs, better revenue management, stronger ancillary sales, improved crew productivity and more effective capital allocation.
